Mount Sterling, Kentucky

Settled in 1792 by Hugh Forbes, Mount Sterling is a county seat and principal city in Montgomery County with a population of nearly 6,000. Forbes, a Scotsman who held a land grant, settled near an ancient tribal burial site known as “Little Mountain.” The name of the community was derived from the name of the mound and Stirling, a town in his native Scotland.

The community is located at the western edge of the Appalachian Mountains, and gives the city a rustic setting despite its close proximity to Lexington, Kentucky’s second largest city.
