Price Hill

Price Hill is a neighborhood in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is subdivided into East Price Hill, West Price Hill and Lower Price Hill. Located on the western front of the city, Price Hill did not begin to develop in the hillier terrain to the west until the later 19th century, and even then, the development was scattered and consisted mainly of large lot residences and farms. It was far enough removed from the crowded basin of the city that it provided an escape for much of the wealthy. One such resident was General Rees E. Price who purchased and later developed large sections of the area that became known as Price’s Hill.

An incline that was completed in the 1870s made Price Hill more accessible to the basin, and most that immigrated to the neighborhood were of Irish or German descent and Catholic. With the completion of the 8th Street Viaduct, the neighborhood became a thriving middle to upper class suburb centered along Glenway Avenue.

Unfortunately, by the 1990s and 2000s, Section 8 housing had been greatly expanded in Price Hill and the general quality of life declined due to a rise in associated crime and decreased property values. Much of the area is seeing revitalization through non-profit community development corporations, such as Price Hill Will, and new privately funded investment.
