High-Long Building at UrbanUp by Sherman Cahal

High-Long Building

Constructed in 1924, the High-Long Building is located at 5 East Long Street.(1) The 12-story, 153-foot building (2) was purchased in 1989 by Bill Blaine of the former Blaine Lumber Company with the intent of a $250,000 restoration project. Work began in 1990 when exterior repair began that included the removal of various store entrances that greatly altered the building's original stone facade. A corner restaurant was also removed due to the smell that "permeated the building," along with the restoration of the lobby. A false ceiling was removed to expose the original vaulted ceiling, and plaster was removed to show off the original steel-case arch that was fancied up with flutes and scrolls. Slate was removed from the walls to reveal pink marble walls, and carpeting was taken up to expose the original marble flooring.
