Lexington Design Center
Constructed in 1927, it once housed a whole-wheat plant, coffin company, the Nehi Bottling company and Allender & Brown Moving and Storage Co.(1) The three-story, 25,000 sq. ft. triangular building along Winchester Road at Walton Avenue was purchased for $665,000 in September 2004 by Gerald Higgs and restored. It is now home to the Lexington Design Center, a "one-stop shop" for homeowners and contractors constructing or renovating a house. Containing 18 retail spaces, it is designed to compliment the businesses in the neighborhood that serve the home building industry. For instance, adjacent to the design center is Ferguson Bath and Kitchen Gallery and the Congleton Lumber Company. Within a several block radius are companies that sell brick, doors, windows, lighting supplies, flooring, roofing materials, countertops, and awnings. Upon its restoration, 60% of the retail spaces were under lease or under negotiations.
